Black is May Youth Optimist at MHS
Levi Black is the May Youth Optimist of the Month at Merrill High School. Nominated by Mrs. Alyssa Swan, she wrote: “I was Levi’s biology teacher when he was a freshman, and I have been Levi’s cross country coach for the last five years. Levi is a very pessimistic individual. (And no, I didn’t mean optimistic). When I first met Levi, he was a very matter-of-fact, very pessimistic eighth grader. He was pessimistic about everything. However, over the years, Levi has become less pessimistic and has embraced a more optimistic view of life. Levi has been very optimistic about his involvement with the Boy Scouts. He achieved his Eagle Scout ranking by making bluebird houses that were then placed on trails at the MARC. Thus, providing more homes for wildlife at our recreation center in town. He is passionate about the Boy Scouts and has been a scout for a very long time.”
Mrs. Swan continued: “Over the past five years, I have seen Levi become more optimistic as a member of my cross country team. He is a leader on the team, taking charge of warm-ups and cooldowns. He cheers his teammates on and will crack jokes to lighten the moods after a hard workout. (These jokes are often pessimistic in nature.) Overall, Levi, this once pessimistic individual, is no longer as pessimistic as he once was. And I’m proud of what he’s accomplished.”
“Levi is a wonderful individual,” Mrs. Swan said. “He is confident, hardworking, and inquisitive. He is exemplary in regards to leadership by example and strives to be the best he can be. I have seen this firsthand during our cross-country practices. Levi leads by being a good example to my other athletes and doesn’t care what others think of him regarding making good decisions. Mentally, he is one of my strongest athletes. In school, Levi has always done well; his overall grade point average is currently a 4.0. He has taken multiple AP classes and has, obviously, done very well in them. I had the pleasure of teaching Levi in biology his sophomore year. Levi always tried his best and, if unsure, always asked high level questions. He is confident in his school work and when interacting with his peers. I truly believe that Levi is wise beyond his years.”
During his high school career, Levi has participated in Cross Country, Track and Field, Marching Band, Merrill Fishing Club, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Merrill Ski Club, and been a Student Representative for the Merrill School Board. When not in school, Levi is active with Boy Scouts (Eagle Scout 2019), and his Church Youth Group (First assistant to the Bishop and Pianist/Chorist for Mens Organization).
Levis greatest desire is to attend the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado where he plans to study aeronautical engineering to become a pilot. As a back-up plan, he has applied to multiple colleges with strong engineering programs, with the intent of doing Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps. Levi is the son of David and Brenda Black.
