All gave some … Some gave all
They gave the ultimate sacrifice for us, lest we ever forget
TINA L. SCOTT
In Merrill, a Memorial Day Service was scheduled to be held at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery on Monday morning, May 31, but on Sunday evening, organizers decided to move the service to the new Northwoods Veterans Post on Johnson Street due to the potential for rain. (Ultimately, the rain held off until late afternoon and early evening, when a series of small thunderstorms brought hail and heavy rain to the Merrill area.)
Veterans of Foreign Wars Schmitt-Manecke-Donner Post 1638 Chaplain, John Rathke, was Master of Ceremonies and explained that due to unforeseen circumstances, the quintet from the Merrill City Band that was scheduled to perform was unable to attend. Other local organizations, including available members of American Legion, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), AMVETS, Auxiliaries, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Girl Scouts also participated. All those in attendance joined in saying the Pledge of Allegiance and singing the National Anthem. In lieu of a special speaker at this year’s event, Chaplain Rathke read the “Honoring Gold Star Parents Speech.” He then introduced VFW Post 1638 Commander Arnold “Vic” Viljevac and led off with an opening prayer. Commander Viljevac shared a few words and then directed the laying of the wreaths.
The wreaths for this year’s ceremony were provided by VFW Post 1638 (wreath laid by Alexis Dampier, the oldest daughter of Spc. Grant Dampier, and Heidi Dampier, the widow of Spc. Grant Dampier, who was killed in action (KIA) May 15, 2006, who walked on either side of Tracy Jopek, mother of Sgt. Ryan Jopek, who was KIA August 2, 2006); AMVETS Post 2000 (wreath laid by Auxiliary member Denni Radloff, who is the mother of veterans Marcus Radloff and Amy Radloff, escorted by Joseph Krueger of Boy Scout Troop 503); American Legion Post 46 (wreath laid by Diana Catlin, widow of Daniel Catlin, U.S. Navy, Vietnam, escorted by Gabe Durbin of Boy Scout Troop 503); Disabled American Veterans Chapter 29 (wreath laid by Tiffany Arnold, daughter of Pam Smith, U.S. Army, Afghanistan, escorted by Hunter Renkin); and VFW Post 1638 Auxiliary (wreath laid by Daniel Catlin, son of Daniel Catlin, U.S. Navy, Vietnam, escorted by Boy Scout Aidan Bly Stone).
VFW Post 1638 Senior Vice Commander, Corey Dornbrack, escorted by Emily Grunenwald, Girl Scout, placed white flowers, a symbol of purity, at the foot of the memorial. “May each future generation emulate the unselfish courage of all men and women who fought for freedom,” the Post Commander said.
Senior Vice President, Auxiliary, Tracy Jopek, escorted by Erik Grunenwald, Boy Scout, placed red flowers, “in memory of the heroic dead who have fallen in defense of the United States of America” as a “tribute of our devotion and everlasting remembrance” at the memorial.
On behalf of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Auxiliary President, Alicia Weix, escorted by Preston Smith, Boy Scout, placed blue flowers, “an emblem of eternity whose color bespeaks life and everlasting” at the foot of the memorial as a way to “immortalize the brave deeds of our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines who have given their lives on land, on sea, and in the air.”
“On behalf of our glorious republic, for whose integrity our comrades enlisted and served,” Post Commander Viljevac began, with a U.S. flag in his hand, an “emblem of the nation,” he approached the foot of the memorial. “The flag of our country was theirs to defend. Its glorious colors shall wave over them in death as in life – for everyone to behold,” he said as he placed the flag.
Senior Vice Commander Dornbrack spoke: “To you, comrades, who have departed, we render a silent salute. Comrades in the silent land beyond, wherever your mortal remains may rest, these solemn services we hold in tribute to you.”
The Honor Guard (consisting of Commander of the Honor Guard, James Moser – Vietnam; Flag, Bud (Lloyd) Schmitz – WWII; John Jirovec – Vietnam; Gene Mootz – Korean Defense; Michele Rathke – Korean Defense; Kathy Palazzo – Korean Defense; and Corey Dornbrack – Desert Storm/OIF) presented a 21-gun salute, a member of the Merrill City Band played Taps, and a moment of silence concluded the ceremony.
Following the observances, brats and hot dogs were available for a free will donation at the Northwoods Veterans Post.
