Kriegel is March Youth Optimist at MHS
Zach Kriegel has been chosen as the March Youth Optimist at Merrill High School (MHS). Mr. Yirkovsky nominated Zach stated: “I have had the pleasure of getting to know Zach the past three years as a teacher, football coach, and advisor for Raise Your Voice Club. Zach has an extremely high level of energy. Every single day he brings intense enthusiasm and compassion. This is consistently seen in how he treats his peers at MHS on a daily basis. He is always willing to be there for other people, which is a quality that will get him very far in life. One thing that helps show his optimism is his ability to be a leader in sports. He was always willing to help his teammates out in football the past three years. Zach also is a strong advocate for mental health awareness. He has been involved in Raise Your Voice Club for the past two years and has had a strong presence in the operations of the Club. All of these qualities show what it means to be an optimist in society.”
Mr. Yirkovsky also commented, “One of the things that makes Zach stand out in his school, and community, is his advocacy for mental health awareness. He is one of our Presidents for Raise Your Voice Club (which helps provide resources regarding mental illness) and has shown great initiative and leadership qualities. He is always ready to provide insight on new ideas to raise awareness for mental health and break the stigma surrounding mental illness. It is nice to see a young man who is so active in so many extracurricular activities take some time to help other people who are fighting battles that no one else can see. Zach has an extremely caring personality and isn’t afraid to put other people before himself. He will make a fantastic teacher someday, and will make many people proud here at Merrill High.”
In addition to being the President of Raise Your Voice Club, Zack is active in baseball, football (The Buck Award), Link Crew, National Honors Society (Vice President), and basketball.
Outside of school, Zach volunteers at Pine Crest, Fairground Clean Up, Boy Scouts (Assistant Senior Patrol Leader & Troop Guide), Eagle Scouts, and Make A Difference Day.
After his high school career, Zach plans to attend the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point for Special Education. He is the son of William and Sherri Kriegel.
