Skomars named Student of the Week

Maple Grove Charter School third grader, Hank Skomars, has been selected Student of the Week, for the week of April 1, 2021.
Son of Kathy and Derek Skomars, Hank was nominated by Ms. Buhr who said: “Hank is one of the most respectful, caring and selfless students that I have ever experienced in my 15 years of teaching. He has this natural ability to ‘read’ people’s thinking, emotions, and needs before anything is uttered and/or before anyone else notices.”
“He is constantly evaluating situations as if he were in that ‘person’s shoes’ and comes up with acts of kindness and solutions to help at that exact moment of need,” Ms. Buhr said. “Perfect examples of this one-of-a-kind behavior include: Giving a fist bump and saying ‘great job’ to a student who did awesome on their focusing stamina. Giving an affirmation to a student who was lacking confidence in their fact fluency by saying ‘You’ve got this!’ Making sure that all students and teachers have a ‘turn and talk partner’ even if it means that he has to do double duty. Having integrity to help clean up a tablemate’s water bottle spill because it was ‘just the right thing to do.’ Offering his classroom supplies up to someone else because ‘they need it more than I do.’”
“I attribute these traits of Hank’s to his family, his previous teachers, and the environment that he was raised in,” Ms. Buhr said. “Obviously he has had some great influences in his life that make him true to who he is today and makes us all want to be better people as well. I can’t wait to see how far and wide his personality and ‘natural knack’ takes him!”
“My favorite subject in school is math,” Hand said, “Because you learn so much and it will be with you your whole life.”
His favorite part of the day? “My favorite part of the day is when I get to see my friends and teacher. Everyone is nice to me,” Hank replied.
When asked what he would like to do/become someday, Hank said, “I would like to be in the NAVY. I would like to be a med personnel or a commander. Or I will be a doctor, because I want to help people when they are hurt.”
