To the Editor:
Now that the snow is melting, many of us who love the amazing outdoor places Merrill has provided us are reminded of the indifference certain people in the community have for others and their property. I’m talking about those who walk their dogs and don’t pick up after them. I can only assume they flush their toilets at home so why would anyone think it’s ok to let your dog leave a pile on a public trail, in someone’s lawn, at a playground, or in the middle of the canoe landing where I found one last summer? Merrill has made it easy to pick up after your pet by placing bag dispensers and waste receptacles in public places. It is a city ordinance that you pick up after your pet. All you need is a Walmart bag and paper towels. I can only guess these people think it will “miraculously” disappear like the virus and cigarette butts. It does disappear, but usually on some poor kid’s shoes while playing at a playground. Plus, it seems like the ones that leave it are the ones that have small ponies for dogs. I walk our dog on Riverside Avenue, the River Bend Trail, out at the state park and the MARC. It doesn’t matter where you go, there is lots of waste. There are many responsible dog owners that I always see carrying a bag. And then there are the ones I never see carrying a bag. Please flush after your pets.
