According a the Department of Workforce Development (DWD), unemployment insurance 2020 tax statements are now available online. Anyone who received Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits in 2020 is reminded that they must report them on their 2020 state and federal tax returns as taxable income. That includes Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC), Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC), Lost Wages Assistance (LWA), and Extended Benefits (EB).
But not all recipients of UI benefits will receive 1099-G income tax statements in the mail as in years past. Anyone who received UI benefits is responsible for getting a 1099-G for reporting purposes even if they do not get it in the mail. How then do you get it?
Recipients of UI can access their 1099-G income tax statements for the year at: https://dwd.wisconsin.gov/uiben/1099.htm. Just follow a few steps to get an electronic copy to use for filing taxes. A recent press release from the DWD said, “In response to customer service trends toward the convenience of online self-service, claimants who have logged onto UI’s online benefits services system are being notified their 1099-G statements for 2020 will be accessible online and that they should not expect to be mailed paper copies.”
The statement went on to say that some 1099-G income tax statements will be mailed. “Claimants who have been granted a long-term exception to using online services will receive their 1099-G statements by mail.”
The DWD will also continue to mail paper copies upon request.
Online 1099-G forms and UI claimant statements of benefits received are available for the last six year on the website. If you did not claim UI benefits for past years, you can access that information online and then file amended tax returns for those years.
