Skoviera/Wheat’s state bid comes up short at WIAA Sectional meet

Bluejay varsity Tennis’ #1 doubles team of Amelia Skoviera and Tessa Wheat lost to Hudson’s number one doubles team of Livi Boily and Jordan Yacoub 6-3, 6-2 at the WIAA Sectional meet on Wednesday Oct.7 , at Wausau West High School.
“They were overachieving for much of the first set,” comments head coach Brad Barton
“We were ahead 3-2 to start the set.  Hudson came into the match with a 10-1 record. It was very nice to see how Amelia and Tessa flipped the switch so to speak with upping their energy level.  When you get to sectionals that is required to have any chance at success.  They both kept their positivity at a fairly high level, too.  They did play a better team I believe, but they scrapped for everything they could get out of the match, so I was very pleased with the effort they both gave.  It is the first doubles team that has made it this far in the last five years.  They are both juniors so they now know what it feels like to get this far, and I know they want more next year.  I could not be more proud of this doubles team.  They came into the match with a 3-1 record and were one win away from going to the state tournament.  I think if you would of asked them at the beginning of the season they would have taken this.”
The duo advanced to the Sectional meet on Monday, Oct. 5 at the WIAA Sub-Sectional meet, after rebounding from a 1-6 first set and two match points in the second set to uproot Rhinelander’s #1 doubles team of Taylor Riopel and Kathryn Borski 1-6, 7-6 (8), 6-4.
