High speed pursuit, collision; results in numerous charges for Antigo man
A 38-year old Antigo man remains in the custody of the Lincoln County following an incident on August 15, during which he reportedly led law enforcement officers on a vehicular pursuit on STH 64 at speeds in excess of 100 mph, before colliding with another vehicle in the City of Merrill.
According to a criminal complaint filed with the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office, on the morning of Saturday, August 15, a Wisconsin State Patrol trooper was on patrol on STH 64 east of the City of Merrill when he observed an oncoming westbound vehicle, which he believed to be traveling in excess of the posted 55 mph speed limit. The vehicle was found to be traveling at a speed of 75 mph, which prompted the trooper to pursue and eventually stop the vehicle near Cain Creek Road in the Town of Pine River.
Upon initial contact with the driver of the vehicle-later identified as Joshua D. Micke of Antigo- Micke reportedly did not have his driver’s license on his person, and gave the trooper what was later found to be false information of his identity.
While the trooper was investigating further, Micke reportedly departed the scene of the traffic stop at a high rate of speed. With the investigating Wisconsin State Patrol trooper in pursuit, Micke’s vehicle reportedly reached speeds in excess of 100 mph, at one point topping 110 mph. During the pursuit, Micke’s vehicle entered a one-way traffic area at the bridge construction-site near Rangeline Road. While traveling westbound in single-lane eastbound traffic, Micke’s vehicle swerved to avoid a tractor, before continuing toward the City of Merrill.
As the pursuit neared the City of Merrill, a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy assisted, as well as officers from the Merrill Police Department. At one point, a Merrill officer deployed a “stop strip”- a device designed to gradually deflate a vehicle’s tires-near Deer Run Avenue and STH 64.
Micke’s vehicle reportedly veered into the ditchline along STH 64 to avoid the device, as well as the officer’s patrol vehicle, before returning to the roadway. Upon entering the City of Merrill, Micke reportedly failed to yield at a stop light at the intersection of Pine Ridge Avenue and State Highway 64; where his vehicle collided with another vehicle. He then fled on foot from the accident scene into a nearby wooded area, where he was apprehended by law enforcement officers.
On Tuesday, Aug. 18 Micke appeared in Lincoln County Circuit Court facing felony charges of 1st-degree recklessly endangering safety, vehicle operator fleeing/eluding an officer and misdemeanor charges of hit and run, bail jumping, operating after revocation, misappropriate ID Info to avoid penalty and resisting or obstructing an officer. During his initial appearance, Micke was ordered held on $10,000 cash bond.
