On Sunday, March 7, the Merrill high school wrestling team held their 60th annual Legion wrestling banquet at Kathy and Cal’s. Merrill wrestlers, parents and coaches were treated to a dinner, which was followed by an award ceremony. The Bluejays WIAA Division 1 third place state finisher, Zach Iribarren took home five awards on the night, with five other wrestlers earning awards as well.
Following a senior season which saw 49 wins and only 3 losses, Iribarren was awarded the Most Pins award, the Rod Genrich Most Takedowns, Most Team Points award, the Mike Hill Orge Award and the prestigious Legion Award presented by John Van Lieshout. Other wrestlers earning awards include: Tanner Depies- Most Dedicated; Ryder Depies- Most Improved underclassmen; Trevor Schenzel- Most improved upperclassmen; Walker Bathke- the Coaches Award; Casey Hoffman- Charles Gustin Outstanding Wrestler award.
