Bluejay girls fall to Wisconsin Rapids
The Merrill girls varsity basketball squad hosted Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday night, Jan. 9, for a Wisconsin Valley Conference showdown. Despite some sloppy play from the Jays they were able to keep themselves on the game up until the second half, where Rapids separated themselves topping the Jays 39-55.
“We had 17 turnovers in the first half and we were only down 21-20,” said Merrill head coach Joelene Weix. “We felt pretty good going into the 2nd half if we could take care of the ball.”
Despite their efforts to take care of the ball better on the second half, the Jays would tally 15 more turnovers and Rapids offense would find it’s groove. Merrill would be outscored 19-34 in the second half of play, however coach Weix believes the team played solid defense despite the loss.
“Rapids came out shooting well in the second half and we again had difficulty taking care of the ball and making shots,” added coach Weix. “Rapids was able to extend the lead and we just could not get any momentum to swing our way. Our defense was pretty good throughout, but we struggled mildly on the offensive end.”
Leading performers for the Jays include: Courtney Krueger (15 pts, 4 reb, 2 ast), Erin Murray (9 pts, 3 reb, 1 stl), Reese Mrachek (5 pts, 4 reb, 1 stl) and Ashley Prebeg (4 pts, 10 reb, 4 blk).
The Lady Jays will be back on their home court on Friday night, as they host D.C. Everest, with tip-off at 7:15 p.m.
