The Merrill Area Chamber of Commerce, with the help of area businesses, have put the finishing touches on their new 18-foot artificial Christmas tree at Banker’s Square.
Following some negative reviews last year, where some people thought the tree was too small for the large space it occupied, the Merrill Chamber set out to find a quality solution.
According to Merrill Area Chamber of Commerce CEO Debbe Kinsey, after some careful consideration the chamber decided an artificial tree was the best option for the location.
“We spoke to some local tree growers to gauge what it would cost for a bigger tree,” said Kinsey. “They informed us that if we wanted to go up to a 18 or 20 foot tree, not only would it be more expensive, but we would also need to hire a crane operator to come in and erect the tree. There is also a liability issue with real trees. Once they are in the ground they need guide wires and stakes to keep them upright, which can cause serious harm to people. So we were told that we would be better off getting an artificial tree, which are made for this exact purpose.”
After some negotiation, the chamber was able to get their new artificial tree, Christmas lights and decoration for a total of $9,000, which was fully covered by a Bierman Family Foundation donation.
“It may seem like it costs a lot for the tree, but it is going to last us for many years,” added Kinsey. “It also has all of the guide wires and anchors inside the tree, taking away any hazard. This tree is perfect for the spot it’s in and if we ever decide we want to make it bigger, there are extensions that can make it up to 30 feet tall that we can purchase when funds are available. Our foundation has reopened our decoration account, so people can make tax-deductable donations and we will continue to add to the courthouse and Banker’s Square with additional decorations as our funds allow us to.”
“We are very appreciative of all of the help from local businesses,” continued Kinsey. “They really make everything happen here in Merrill, from donations to help with erecting our new tree, this community has been great.”
