A 53-year old Merrill woman died this past week after a single vehicle crash in the Town of Merrill. On Wednesday, August 28th, 2019 at 11:54 a.m. a 911 call reported a vehicle had left the road on State Rd 107 at Swede Rd and struck a tree. The single occupant of the vehicle was transported by EMS to Ascension Good Samaritan Health Center where she was pronounced dead by Lincoln County Coroner Paul C. Proulx. The victim, Johanna L. Hoerstmann was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
A 48-year old Tomahawk woman was arrested early Friday evening after a traffic stop in the City of Tomahawk. A deputy stopped the woman on West Spirit Ave for defective equipment. When contact was made the deputy detected signs of impairment. The driver was asked to perform field sobriety tests and as a result was arrested for a third offense of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated along with a misdemeanor charge of bail jumping. The driver is out on bond through Lincoln County for a pending OWI case which requires absolute sobriety. If convicted of the pending offense this case could be modified to a felony fourth offense charge.
Tomahawk and DNR firefighters along with a deputy responded to a brush fire on Saturday afternoon in the Town of Bradley. The incident was reported at 2:26 p.m. at an address off of Tannery Rd. The fire was quickly contained by firefighters and did not threaten any structures. The investigation was turned over to the DNR.
Deputies will be issuing several citations for underage alcohol consumption after deputies investigated a gathering late Saturday evening in the Town of Harding. When deputies arrived numerous people fled into the woods. In total 18 Merrill area residents ranging in age from 16 to 20 were contacted including one who was found passed out in a wooded area near the cabin where the event was taking place. Numerous parents were contacted to advise them where their vehicle or children were located.
A 19-year old Tomahawk man was injured after a motorcycle crash Sunday afternoon in the Town of Bradley. The man was traveling east on County Rd CC near Wildwood Rd when he lost control of his motorcycle and flipped it over. The driver was transported by Tomahawk EMS to Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital, from there he was flown to the trauma center at Aspirus. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, Tomahawk firefighters assisted at the scene.
A 60-year old woman from southern Wisconsin was injured after a single ATV crash in the Town of Harrison Sunday afternoon. The woman was riding with a group on a trail between Cinder Rd and Parrish Rd when her ATV left the roadway and struck a tree. The woman was removed from the woods by Russell first responders and firefighters. Life Link Nine responded to the scene but paramedics from Oneida County Medic One opted to transport the woman by ground to Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital in Rhinelander. Deputies reported alcohol was not a factor; the woman was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The number of deer crashes has gone up over previous weeks, eleven people reported striking deer this past week.
