DPI seeks public input on standards for art and design

New draft academic standards for art and design are available for public review.
A public hearing will be held July 29 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Department of Public Instruction, Room P41. There will also be a survey open for public comments starting on July 9. The survey will be open for 30 days and can be found at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/artdesigncomment.
In April 2019, the State Superintendent’s Standards Review Council recommended revising current art and design standards. A writing committee representing art educators, school leaders, higher education, artists, and business owners was established to develop the new standards. Co-chairs of the committee are Tiffany Beltz, an art educator from Irving Pertzsch Elementary School in Onalaska; and Jen Dahl, an art educator from Red Creek Elementary School and Forrest Street Early Learning Center in Black River Falls.
During the public comment period, the standards will be submitted to the Assembly and Senate Education committees for legislative review and comment. The State public hearing boxSuperintendent’s Standards Writing Committee will review all comments, both from the public and the Legislature, and incorporate any necessary changes before submitting the standards to the State Superintendent’s Standards Review Council for its recommendations. The standards will then be submitted to the state superintendent for approval and publication.
Those intending to testify at the July 29 Madison hearing will be required to present photo identification at the security desk near the Webster Street public entrance. Those who need to use the building’s handicapped accessible entrance on Butler Street should press the doorbell for admittance and check in with security.
English Language Arts Standards and Physical Education Standards Review
Surveys will open on July 9 for public comment on whether the Department of Public Instruction should revise the Wisconsin Standards for English Language Arts and the Wisconsin Standards for Physical Education. Both surveys will be open for public comment until August 30.
Any individual, group, or agency may submit written comments or information regarding those academic standards through online survey forms. The State Superintendent’s Standards Review Council will examine comments and recommend whether or not the department should revise the current English language arts and physical education standards.
