Please join Live Sustainable, Lincoln County for a walkabout of the Tall Pines Community Garden on Tuesday, July 16, beginning at 6 p.m.
The garden is located on the corner of Memorial and 6th Street, east of the Pine Crest campus and across the street from the Lincoln County Humane Society. The gardeners will be serving lemonade and plan to talk about their vegetable plantings. Master Gardener volunteers will be on-hand to answer or research questions you might have.
Tall Pines Community Garden began 5 years ago as a grant to the Lincoln County Health Department to promote food security and teach folks about gardening. Several initiatives were spun from that grant and include a garden club at Pine Crest. The gardeners are encouraged to donate at least 10 percent of their harvest to local food pantries. There were a few open plots that were not rented this year. Those have been planted with tomatoes, peppers, lettuces, and beans for additional donations to food pantries. Kids from the Summer Park and Recreation programing also benefit and learn about growing food.
The management of the garden depends on volunteer help and encourages anyone who loves gardening and has an hour or so to share, to stop in at the University of Wisconsin- Madison Division of Extension office in the lower level of the Lincoln County Service Center to sign up. Another way to connect with volunteers is to simply stop at the garden any Monday morning about 9:30 am and help Larry, Tom, and Lynn weed, water, nurture and harvest the community garden.
