Merrill and Tomahawk area Memorial Day events

Volunteers from the area will be placing Memorial Day flags at the graves of veterans on record with the Lincoln County Veterans Service Office. This takes place approximately one week before and then they will remove the flags approximately one week after Memorial Day. Unfortunately, they experience difficulty in locating some of the graves. Relatives and friends of veterans buried in those cemeteries are asked to determine whether or not the graves are marked with a flag and a flag holder. If a grave is not marked with a flag, they are asked to stop at the Lincoln County Veterans Service Office at 801 Sales St. in Merrill to pick up a flag.

The public is encouraged to attend the following Memorial Day Ceremonies:

Thursday, May 23. 2 p.m. at the Tomahawk Elementary School Gym (1048 E. King Rd. Tomahawk)

Veteran’s Memorial Ceremony
Sunday, May 25. 9 a.m. at Prairie Rapids Cemetery

The Tomahawk Honor Guard will be placing flagholders of veteran’s graves at St. Augustine, Oak Hill, Calvary, Somo, Union Congregational and Prairie Rapids cemeteries on Saturday, May 18 and will remove a week after. Relatives and friends of veterans buried in those cemeteries are asked to determine whether or not the graves are marked with a flag and a flagholder. If a grave is not marked with a flag, they are asked to stop at the Lincoln County Veterans Service Office at 801 Sales St. in Merrill to pick up a flag, during regular business hours of 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. After hours or on weekends, please contact the following for assistance in obtaining a marker for a veteran’s grave.

Merrill Area Memorial Day Ceremony
The Merrill area Memorial Day ceremony will be held Monday, May 27 at the Merrill High School Auditorium. The Merrill City Band will start playing at 10:30 a.m. with the ceremony starting at 11 a.m.
