On Thursday night the Merrill girls soccer team got their first win of the season, coming against Shawano. It was a very tight game, but the Jays held on for a 2-1 win.

The first half of play was when the Jays would do their damage, explains Merrill head coach Kyle Hahn, “It was great to get the first win of the season and against a sectional opponent to boot!” comments Hahn, “Conditions were a bit windy to say the least and our girls took advantage of the extra boost in the first half with eight shots on goal and six corner kicks. Journey Smith netted twice off of assists from McKenna Smith and Hannah Wolff-Shimel,”

In the second half of action the momentum would shift in Shawanos’ favor, as they scored one goal to keep the game close, however they could not tie the game. “The second half was a bit harder with the wind in our faces,” adds Hahn, “Shawano was able to get one back, but our girls did well to see the game out.”
