Merrill track opens up indoor season

On Tuesday afternoon the Merrill boys track and field team hosted their first indoor track meet of the season. The Jays performance was middle of the road, finishing fourth out of a six team field.

The openeing event was the 50 meter dash where Merrill’s Nik Zastrow took first place, running a time of 6.08 seconds. Merrill’s James Pawlicki would also do well in the event, tying for third place with a run of 6.2 seconds. In the 400 meter dash Taron Gutowski took second place for the Jays, running a time of 58.5 seconds.

The Jays did well in distance running with two athletes finishing top five in the 1600 meter run. Dominic Laufenberg placed second with a time of 5:03.80, while Kyle Stellingworth took fourth with a run of 5:32.00. In the 3200 meter run Merrill’s Kurtis Schulz took third place with a time of 12:30.60.

Merrill fared well in the hurdles, with Carter Jensen taking third place in the 50 meter event, running a time of 8.68 seconds. Jensen would also take third place in the 55 meter hurdles, with a time of 8.26.

In the realys Merrill would take second place in both the 4×400 and 4×800 relays. The 4×400 relay was ran by Zastrow, Gutowski, Pawlicki and Tyler Wolff in a time of 3:42.80. The 4×800 relay featured Stellingworth, Laufenberg, Schulz and David Genrich who ran a time of 10:23.30.

In the field events Merrill didn’t do great, however Dominic Leistikow would place third in the pole vault, reaching a height of 10-06. The shot put was the final event and Merrill’s Robert Oestresch placed fourth with a throw of 37-03.00.
