Local book club celebrates 15 years with Wisconsin author
The Book Bags, a Merrill book club, celebrated its 15th year with Northwoods author Victoria Houston as their luncheon guest and speaker.
Founded in 2003 by Helen Kolka and Charmaine Whitburn, the original group had eight members who had recently retired, all of whom resided in Merrill. They met monthly in members’ homes and set the goal of each year reading one selection written by a Wisconsin author, and one classic, in addition to members’ recommendations.
Today there are 10 members from the Merrill and Wausau areas, meeting eight months each year, often at a local restaurant or coffee shop. The designated hostess leads the lively discussions!
The recent luncheon brought the Book Bags full circle as their year one Wisconsin-author book choice was Dead Water, Houston’s first novel in the series. This month they read Dead Spider, the 17th novel in the series.
