On Friday afternoon the Merrill golf team hosted the third leg of conference play at the Merrill Golf Course. The Jays were led by sophomore Russell Dettmering, and scored 365 points as a team.

Dettmering had the lowest score in the entire field shooting 73 (+1) on the day. He was followed by Michael Casper who shot 90 (+18).

Coach Joe Mertens has been happy with Casper’s play of late.

“Michael Casper is making a great deal of improvement for the team, his score has improved each time he has played and during this round his score could have been much better if not for two very bad holes,” Mertens said.
Hunter Wallace didn’t have the round he had hoped for as he shot 100 (+28). Rounding out Merrill’s varsity team was Michael Cammack with a 103 (+31) and Nicolas Roman who shot 105 (+33).

With Russell Dettmering’s performance he now took over the top spot for conference scoring leaders.

“Russell Dettmering took over the individual conference scoring lead on Friday,” Coach Mertens said. “Russell’s round highlighted his never give up determination as he concluded his round with four birdies over the last six holes to take the medalist honors for the day and the conference overall at the midway point.”

The Merrill golf team will hit the links again on Friday, May 11, as they travel to Wausau Country Club for another varsity meet at 2 p.m.
