ATV rider dies after crash with bear

At approximately 7:38 p.m. Thursday, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office 911 Center received a report of an ATV crash that occurred in the town of Wilson. Tomahawk EMS, Tomahawk Fire Department. a Wisconsin DNR Conservation Warden, a Wisconsin State Trooper, and deputies from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of the crash.

Per the investigation, a 51-year-old male operator was traveling westbound on Cty. CC east of Poplar Drive when the ATV struck a bear. The ATV rolled and the operator was ejected.

Tomahawk EMS transported the operator to Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital in Tomahawk with critical injuries. He was later transferred by Medivac helicopter to Aspirus Wausau Hospital where he died from his injuries.

The operator was not wearing a helmet and there were no passengers on the ATV at the time of the crash. According to the Sheriff’s Office, alcohol does not appear to be a factor. The crash remains under investigation by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
