On Monday (Oct. 3), Merrill traveled to Stevens Point to face fellow division rivals in the first round of regionals. Unfortunately, Merrill was only able to muster one set win in singles. The win was not enough to advance in either singles or doubles, ending Merrill’s post-season run.
For the singles, Katie Nelson of Merrill defeated Megan Ninneann, 2-6, 6-3, 6-6 (4), Kristina Jacobson, of Rhinelander defeated Lea Beckman, 6-1, 6-1, Sara Gliniecki of Wausau East defeated Rachel Rell, 6-0, 6-0 and Leah Blaskowski of East defeated Sierra Severt, 6-3, 6-3.
In the doubles, Sarah Snoeyenbos & Lilia Teske of Wausau West defeated Allison Winter-Reed & Cate Murray, 6-2, 6-2, Hannah Stroede & Katie Krueger of Rhinelander defeated Olivia Wheat & Sierra Humphrey, 6-4, 7-5 and Benna Stengl & Allie Reif of Wausau East defeated Casie McAllister & Hailey Schult, 6-1, 6-1.
Thus concludes the tennis season with Merrill achieving two sub-sectional points, placing 15 out of 16 teams in regionals.
