Young artists recognized in VFW art contest

Local winners were recently selected for the Young American Art Scholarship contest sponsored by the VFW Auxiliary to Post 1638. All are students from Merrill High School.
Taking 1st place for her art titled “PTSD,” was MHS sophomore Shania Hornischer. Shania’s art was sent to the state level for further judging. Placing 2nd was MHS sophomore Zoe Slewitze for her art titled “Soldier’s Life & Soul.” Placing third was MHS junior Jeffrey Fillmore for his art titled “American Soldier.”
In a second round of judging by post and auxiliary members titled “Post Choice Awards’, all entries were submitted by Merrill High School students. Placing 1st was Hornischer. Placing 2nd was MHS sophomore Tori Folz. Tori’s art was titled “Be Safe.” Placing 3rd was Jeffrey Fillmore. Placing 4th was MHS junior Serena Helman for her art titled “Colors of War”. Placing 5th was MHS sophomore Megan Brewer for her art titled “Soldier.”
All students were given cash awards and a certificate of achievement.
