Who founded Mother’s Day?
Each year the second Sunday of May is a special day to honor and recognize mothers. Have you ever wondered what organization worked towards making the Mother’s Day holiday possible?
Several organizations have stepped forward in an attempt to take credit for the holiday, however documented evidence shows that the Fraternal Order of Eagles were the true founders of Mother’s Day.
On Feb. 7, 1904, Fraternal Order of Eagles Past Grand Worthy President Frank E. Hering made a public plea for a new national holiday dedicated to honoring mothers everywhere. A decade later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation making that dream a reality.
To continue the mission of the Eagles organization, the Merrill Eagles Ladies Auxiliary #584 donated 12 Mother’s Day baskets acknowledging the mothers at HAVEN of Merrill. Each basket will contain spa items, a box of chocolates donated by Ye Olde Sweet Shoppe and bus tokens donated by Merrill Transit System.
