Despite a hard fought effort, the Bluejay varsity wrestlers finished 11th on Wednesday in the 16 team Northern
Exposure tournament at the MHS Field House.
The Jays fell to New Berlin 44-29 in their debut bout Wednesday, then rebounded with a thrilling last-minute win over Menomonie 37-33 to finish the day with a 3-4 overall tournament record.
Junior Devon Schultz (1p) enjoyed a spotless 7-0 record over the two day event, followed by junior Brendan Leder (2p), senior Tanner Pettit (4p) and senior Christian Kleinschmidt tying at 5-2 (5p).
Senior Aidan Ball (2p) and junior Brody Zocher (4p) finished with 4-3 tournament records respectively.
“Overall I felt we did very well being short handed,” comments first-year head coach Brian Suchocki.
“We had a wrestler sustain an injury Monday night and was unable to compete. We had another wrestler out of town on vacation. Having low numbers this year to start off with, we knew the odds were against us going in. This is a pretty grueling event due to each wrestler going 7 matches. I was very happy with how we finished off strong and beat Menomonie in our final dual.”
