Hatchets stumble in GNC finish

Round two of the Great Northern Conference meet didn’t quite go as planned for the Tomahawk varsity volleyball squad on Saturday, as the ladies fell 3-2 to both Medford (18-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23,15-11) and Antigo (22-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-18, 15-2) at Antigo High School.

“Same story as we’ve had all year,” comments head coach Paul Zierten.

“We played well at some points and really dropped the ball at others. Our team must get tougher mentally if we’re going to make any run late into October-November. We played a couple of great games and the girls looked extremely good but it was not enough to carry us throughout the day. We will probably be the #5 seed…we potentially could’ve been the #2. Not a great way to end your regular season.”

Leaders: Hannah Meyer (56K); Colynn Behling (31K); Becca Doughty (115 ast); Hannah Feest (45D); Courtney Theiler (25D).

Tangling with the T-Birds

Tuesday night the ladies flipped three of a kind at Lakeland, taking down the T-Birds (25-18, 25-10, 25-17).

“We started off strong in the first game and then a slump in the middle of the game, but were able to win it,” Zierten adds. “The second game, Hannah Meyer served 14 straight along with 6 aces in that stretch. Overall we did not hit well, but passed the ball extremely well, which is something we’ve really tried to key in on as of late. I was happy with their performance aside from the slump mid-game and hitting errors. It was a good win for us going into Saturday’s matches.

Leaders: Hanna Meyer (11K); Danaca Shore (6K); Doughty (27a); Feest (11D); Meyer (10AC); Lexi Graeber (6AC).
