MHS kickers stop Mosinee

The Bluejay soccer team dropped another Valley game in last Tuesday’s 5-0 loss to Wausau East, but responded to the disappointment with a 3-1 triumph over Mosinee at home on Friday.
“We didn’t play 100%,” MHS coach Luis Mendoza said of the Mosinee game. “I don’t know if we underestimated them. But it’s a good thing we came out with the win.”
Keenan Stellingworth ran onto a through-ball from Brian Root and beat a defender and the goalie for the opening score as Merrill racked up three first-half goals.
Root made it 2-0 by hammering a free kick into the goal from near mid-field.
Riley Sutton closed out the Merrill scoring with an assist from Stellingworth..
East hardly least
The Lumberjacks built a 4-0 lead in the first half of Tuesday’s contest behind three goals and an assist from Jordan Heiting. Trevor Holcomb scored the only second-half gaol. Nikheil Biswas set up three tallies including the final one.
“We had a couple of playes hurt – Brian, Ty (Lorbiecki) and Aiden (Ball) – and Matt (Ladewig) was sick,” Medoza said. “We could have used all four of them.
“We played good, but not good enough to contain them. The second half was better.”
Trent Rathke finished with 12 saves as East took 39 shots. Adam Petersen only had to make one save against Merrill. Its only shot was on goal.
Merrill was 3-9-2 overall and 0-6 in the WVC heading into Tuesday’s action. East (2-1-4) was tied for third with Marshfield (3-3-1). SPASH (4-0-3) was first, while D.C.E. ranked second (3-1-3). Ties are up in the league after a new WIAA rule to save overtime for the playoffs.
