Hatchet spikers second in Whitewater

The Hatchet volleyball girls pounded out their best finish ever in the prestigious UW-Whitewater Invite, placing second in the 15-team event with a 5-1 overall mark, coming within a 15-13 game of the title.
Senior Anna Nyberg also wrapped up tourney MVP honors and was joined by Hanna Meyer on the All-Tournament team.
“I thought the girls did a good job of coming out to play today,” THS coach Amanda Kriese said. “In pool play they took care of  business right away. Everyone got a chance to get some minutes against tough teams. We ended up in the gold pool and played some tough teams, only losing to Union Grove in three.
“I was happy with our offensive firepower throughout the day, and our serving. We need to work on our blocking and serve-receive passing, but that will come with time. We finished in second place in a tough tournament, and I was happy about the level of play the girls showed. Now we look to continue improving before conference starts.”
The Hatchets handled Williams Bay (25-9, 25-5) and Oak Creek (25-11, 25-19) in pool play, advancing them to the gold pool where they dropped Catholic Central (25-16, 25-9), Madison La Follette (25-16, 25-9), fell to Union Grove (26-24, 22-25, 13-15) and rebounded against Platteville (25-18, 21-25, 15-11).
Top stats came from: Nyberg (57 kills, 16 aces, 4 blocks, 40 digs); Meyer (46 k, 9 ac, 3 bl, 26 digs, 2 assists); Becca Doughty (9 k, 11 ac, blocks 2 bl, 21 d, 132 as); Emily Schneider (14 k, 13 ac, 8 bl, 9 d, 3 as); Hannah Feest (4 ac, 40 d); Colynn Behling (12 k, 9 bl, 4 d); Megan Lee: (8 ac, 16 d, 2 as); and Lexi Graeber (9 k, 4 bl, 8 d, 1 as).
