Forensic pathologist testifies in Baumann trial

Day three of the Ashley Baumann trial featured testimony from the forensic pathologist who performed the autopsy on Misty Glisch. Robert Corliss testified that Glisch had an injury on her left shoulder consistent with seatbelt use.
“There were very classic restraint markings on Misty,” he said.
Both the prosecution and defense are trying to establish for the jury where each of the four passengers were located in Baumann’s vehicle when it crashed June 7, 2012, and rolled in a field off Alexander Street. Glisch and Jessica Hartwig were killed in the crash, while Baumann and Jerrica Woller were seriously injured.
Prosecutors claim Baumann was driving at the time. She faces seven felony charges, including two counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle. Her blood alcohol concentration was measured at .157 five hours after the crash.
Woller, who testified Tuesday, says she was in the back seat with Glisch and both were wearing seatbelts. She said Baumann was driving and her sister, Jessica Hartwig, was in the front passenger seat. Neither was wearing a seatbelt.
Based on Glisch’s shoulder injury, Corliss said she was most likely on the driver’s side of the vehicle.
When shown photos of Hartwig’s injuries, Corliss said he didn’t see any definitive restraint markings. He said he could see nothing that indicated her placement in the vehicle.
He was also shown photos of Woller’s injuries and again said he didn’t see any definitive restraint markings.
No autopsy was performed on Hartwig, although Corliss said he did review photographs of her injuries.
Dr. Ken Sullivan, an emergency room doctor at Good Samaritan Health Center, testified that Woller’s injuries did not indicate that she was driving at the time of the crash.
Merrill Police detective Mark Heckendorf also testified Wednesday morning. He said he interviewed Baumann on June 15, 2012, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. According to Heckendorf, at that time, Baumann didn’t remember anything after ordering a pitcher of beer at the tavern where the four were last seen early on June 7.
One juror was excused this morning because his wife is having surgery on Friday. The trial is scheduled for seven days and attorneys expect deliberations to start no earlier than late Friday.
