Merrill Fire Fighters Charities recently presented a check for $3,000 to Freida Swanson for the Merrill Community Christmas Spirit Appeal program.
The firefighters in Merrill have been very involved in the community around Christmas time. It started in the 1950’s when fire fighters started fixing old toys and giving them to local children in need. This went on for decades and has evolved into the current Tree of Hope Program. The Tree of Hope Program works closely with school teachers, local churches and Lincoln County Social Services to purchase food, clothing and toys for the elderly, handicapped and needy children in our area.
“We are all fortunate to live in a community where people look out for and help their neighbors in times of need,” said MFD Captain Mike Drury, who coordinates the Tree of Hope program. “We have been able to witness these acts of kindness each year and without your generosity the Tree of Hope Program would not be a success. This year our tree is located in front of your new Fire Station, 110 Pier Street. The Firefighters would like to remind everyone to stay safe this Holiday Season and to extend a wish to all for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
