Hatchet spikers push GNC mark to 8-0

The state’s fifth-ranked Hatchet volleyball team tacked on another pair of GNC victories last week to increase its league-leading tally to 8-0.
Tomahawk boosted its overall mark to 27-3 with Thursday’s 25-10, 25-9, 25-9 sweep at Lakeland.
“The match was really slow,” THS coach Amanda Charles said. “I told the girls that they have to stay focused and to not play down to their level. Yet again our serving took them out of their game. We had 22 aces in the match and we had a couple kids with 5 aces. It was a great team effort.
“This next week is going to be busy with Homecoming and three matches all at home.”
The locals got offerings from: Becca Doughty (5 aces, 20 assists, 3 blocks, 5 digs); Anna Nyberg (12 kills, 5 ac, 5 d); Alex DuPlayee (8 k, 7 d); Hanna Doughty (7 k, 4 bl); Amanda Schneider (5 d); Emily Schneider (4 ac, 3 k); Hanna Meyer (4 k); Megan Lee (4 d); Hannah Feest (3 d).
The Hatchets’ annual pink night for breast cancer awareness will be held Thursday. The team will have raffle baskets, and sell T-shirts, leis, and tattoos. All proceeds will go to Ties That Bind Us, a non-profit breast cancer organization.
Taming Hodags
Tomahawk dropped Rhinelander to 4-4 in conference last Tuesday with a 25-12, 25-5, 25-11 rout.
“I thought the girls got off to a quick start,” Charles said. “We served very aggressively throughout the match. Rhinelander had a hard time getting their offense going because we were serving so tough at them. We had a total of 20 aces in the match; that’s almost a whole game of scoring only on serves.
“Rhinelander just couldn’t get going. They tried to get the ball out to their outside hitters and when they did, we were there with a huge block. I think that our block was the best it has been so far this season. Hanna D., Emily, and Colynn (Behling) were getting out to the pin and took their hitters out. After blocking them a few times, they were more timid and we were able to pick up their hits easily with our defense. I’m proud of their effort and drive to win.”
Contributions came from: Nyberg (12 k, 3 ac, 2 bl, 7 d); B. Doughty (5 ac, 3 bl, 3 d, 23 as); DuPlayee (5 k, 8 d); Meyer (3 k, 3 ac, 2 bl); A. Schneider (7 ac); E. Schneider (3 k, 4 d); H. Doughty (4 k, 2 bl); Maddie Garrison (4 d); Lauren Bembinster (3 as); and Behling (2 bl).
