Merrill Police offer free bicycle registration

The Merrill Police Department is offering free bicycle licenses for any city resident that owns or purchases a bicycle.
The police department continues to recover abandoned bicycles found in the City of Merrill. Many of the recovered bicycles are not registered. When bicycles are found that do not display a registration sticker, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to track down the owner of the bike so it can be returned. Recovered bicycles that remain in the Merrill Police Department garage eventually are disposed of if no one comes to claim them.
Registering a bicycle in the City of Merrill typically costs $3. In an effort to promote registration, the police department is offering registration at no cost for a limited time.
Registration not only assists the police in identifying the owner of a lost or stolen bicycle, it also can serve as a deterrent to a would-be bicycle thief.
The Merrill Police Department encourages everyone to protect property by recording identifying information, including serial numbers and keeping that information in a safe place in the event property is lost or stolen. This is especially true of bicycles and it is very easy to do by registering a bicycle with the Merrill Police Department.
Registration forms can be picked up and/or filled out at the Merrill Police Department during business hours. A bicycle registration form can also be found on the City of Merrill website where it can be printed, completed and returned to the police department in person or by email or fax.
