Kickers catch coaches? eyes

The MHS girls soccer team may not have won a Valley game, but that doesn’t mean some of the Bluejays weren’t playing at a high level. Seniors Sydney Harris was named to the Second Team and senior Ashley Millenbah picked up Honorable Mention.
“Both of these girls are very deserving; their time, effort and leadership that they’ve given to the program will be tough to replace!” MHS coach Steph Nelson said.
“Ashley is a very versatile player; the main reason why she got both (team) MVP and Honorable Mention is because especially at the end of the season, she would literally play four different positions in one game.
“We had a lot of injuries at the end so if we needed a sub at defense, she’d go back to play D. She originally started at outside mid, but to add a little more offense to our game we put her up to forward where she scored the first goal of the season. Then depending on who else needed subs, she might play an inside mid position as well. So outside mid, inside mid, outside defense and forward all in one game.
“The really nice thing was we could do this without worrying that she would know where to go or what to do, she’d just do it naturally.
“Sydney is also very versatile, but she is the most deadly up at forward. She started the season at an attacking mid position and created a lot of offense from there, but she really made teams nervous when we switched up to forward.
“You could hear other coaches yelling to get on #9 any time the ball would start coming for an attack, but she could dribble through many people and either go on a 1v1 herself or lay the ball off to someone else.
“She was a lifesaver at the end also because we could put her back at a defensive mid position and she could both defend well and start attacks from way in the back field.
“She’s one of our most technical players, and being a cross country stud really helped the entire team out because she would be going after any ball that was close to her the entire game without ever needing a sub.”
