Wegener edged at sectional
Winning a playoff put the Hatchet golf team in last Wednesday’s WIAA Barron Sectional at Rice Lake’s Turtleback G.C., but losing one kept Turner Wegener from a dream spot in the WIAA State Meet.
Wegener fired a 41-37-78 to finish in a four-way tie for the final individual state qualifying spot of three available. But he dropped a play-off to Bloomer’s Noah Price, who birdied the first playoff hole.
“Turner’s goal coming into the sectional was to shoot 78 or better and hope to advance,” THS coach Garth Gerstenberger said. “He played a great back nine and was able to attain his goal of 78. Unfortunately, he got beat in the playoff by a guy who was able to step up his game and get a birdie on the first playoff hole.
“Turner had 4 birdies on the day and birdied both the par 3’s on the back nine. Turner tallied only 24 putts on the day, but had a costly three putt on the 18th hole.”
Tomahawk ranked 12th of 12 in team standings. Chad O’Brien (48-47) and Tanner Laack (45-50) both shot 95, while Nick Osero (53-48) and Dan Geraty (52-49) each hit 101.
“As a team, we peaked at the right time, posting our best rounds of the year at the final conference meet and the regional tournament,” Gerstenberger said. “I was pleased that we were able to advance the team to the sectional meet. We were seeded seventh and snuck into the fourth spot. Playing in the sectional meet was the frosting on the cake for the team.”
