Hatchets rally at Medford
The Hatchet softball team ran into some top-notch competition last week, and captured one game of four. They dropped both in Saturday’s D.C. Everest tourney, but forged an excellent split in last Tuesday’s double-header with Medford.
The Red Raiders dominated the opener 17-1, but THS rallied for a 10-9 Game 2 win.
“Awesome bounce-back win!” THS coach John Larson said. “I was very proud of the way the girls responded after getting down 7-2 early. Our pitching was much improved, and we came up with timely hits. Our base-running was outstanding.”
Morgan Weber sent the game into extra innings with an RBI triple in the bottom of the 7th, and a Stephanie Schoone walk and slick base-running won it. Mandy Timm (2-3, 2 RBI), Weber (3B) and Schoone (3B) led the Hatchets to an 8-4 hit advantage. Sydney Myre (2 H, 2 W, 2 K, 7 R, 0 ER in 2 I) started, and Alex DuPlayee (2 H, 2 W, 4 K, 2 R, 1 ER in 4 I) collected the win.
Medford scored 11 in the 1st inning of the first game, added 2 in the 2nd and 4 in the 4th. THS broke the shut-out in the 5th.
“To put things simply, nothing went well in this game,” Larson said.
Ashley Berg (3-3) and Stephanie Welke (1-3) accounted for all Hatchet hits. DuPlayee (3 H, 5 W, 0 K, 9 R, 7 ER in 0 I) was roughed up and Myre (5 H, 3 W, 3 K, 8 R, 0 ER in 4 I) finished it.
D.C. Everest tourney
Tomahawk left a winnable game with Wis. Dells on the table after their tourney hosts took Game 1 with a late rally.
The Hatchets overcame an early 5-1 deficit with 2 in the 3rd and 5 in the 4th for an 8-5 advantage. But the Chiefs took back a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the 4th, and added 4 more in the 5th.
“The girls responded with seven runs, but after that the bats went silent,” Larson said. “We struggled against a below-average pitcher, weren’t patient, and our timing was off.”
The Hatchets “took a step back” by committing 7 errors. Just 2 of 13 runs were earned.
Leading hitters included Timm (2-2), DuPlayee (2-4 2 RBI), Schoone (2-4, 2B) and Welke (2-5). Myre (1 W, 3 K, 9 R, 2 ER in 4 I) and DuPlayee (4 W, 2 K, 4 R, 0 ER in 2 I) shared pitching duties.
Tomahawk trailed Everest just 2-0 after 4 innings, but D.C.E. scored 3 in the 5th and 5 in the 6th to take a 10-2 triumph.
“For four innings, this was a good game,” Larson said. “We had a couple of opportunities early, and couldn’t get bunts down. Pitching was better, but still too many walks.”
DuPlayee (9 H, 7 W, 3 K, 10 R, 7 ER in 6 I) took the loss. Welke went 2-3 as Tomahawk had 6 hits.
