Lincoln County World War I memorial to become a reality

Merrill is about to benefit from the joining of two existing WWI artifacts.
Since its dedication in 1923 the Cenotaph Memorial has graced Merrill’s West side. A lesser known but very important memorial has been hidden away for decades. The Merrill Historical Society has rediscovered a 3′ wide x 7′ high Bronze Plaque in storage. This massive marker prominently lists the names of our Lincoln County Veterans who died in World War I.
Approvals have now been given to restore and display this treasure. It will be prominently placed next to Merrill’s Cenotaph Park Memorial. Plans also include paver stones engraved with the names of additional local WWI veterans who died in service plus a granite dedication stone and walk of honor.
The sum of $2,500 is needed to complete this project with the dignity it deserves. Donations are now being accepted. With proper funding a dedication ceremony may happen as soon as this Memorial Day.
This project is co-sponsored by Marathon/Lincoln Co VFW Post 10203, Merrill VFW Post 1638 & Tomahawk VFW Post 2687.
Please send donations to: VFW POST 10203, 14641 Cty Hwy F, Hamburg, WI 54411, with Cenotaph Fund in the memo line, or contact a VFW member.
