George Dettmering

George Dettmering, 94, of Irma passed away on Sunday, December 16, 2012 at Aspirus Hospice House.
He was born February 22, 1918 in the town of Pine River to the late Gustav and Anna (Helmsteader) Dettmering. George was raised on the family farm until he met Sylvia Krueger at a wedding dance. They married on September 14, 1940 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Wausau.
After working at Kraft Cheese for several years, George and Sylvia moved to Wittenberg in 1956 and started Dettmering Jewelers where George was a jeweler and watchmaker. George also drove bus for the Wittenberg school district for 32 years. After retiring in 1982, George and Sylvia moved to Wausau where they were a “Security Couple” at Kannenberg Plaza for 20 years.
Their pastimes included motorcycle riding, golfing and snowmobiling. George and Sylvia enjoyed spending time at their cottage on Pier Lake where George loved teaching his grandchildren how to fish, hunt and drive the four wheeler.
Survivors include his daughter, Cheryl (Rodney) Couillard of Irma, four grandchildren, Michelle (David) Tichinel of Clintonville, Jodi Pike of Green Bay, Chris (Jessica) Bargender of Wausau, Jeff Bargender of Rothschild, five great grandchildren, Adam (Tanya) Zuehl, Cody Zuehl, Amy and Selena Tichinel, Kason Bargender and two great great grandchildren, Ethan and Lillian Zuehl. George was preceded in death by Sylvia, his daughter, Judy Pike, five sisters, Lula Dettmering, Marion Keinitz, Eleanor Scharbius, Irene Rasmussen, Elaine Kufahl and four brothers, Norman, Raymond, Lawrence and Vernon.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at the Helke Funeral Home, Wausau. Reverend Joel Danner will officiate. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park.
