Wal-Mart hearing

The city of Merrill Plan Commission will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, May 1, to take comments on Wal-Mart’s application for a conditional use permit. Wal-Mart is proposing to build a new store at 505 S. Pine Ridge Ave., across Hwy. 64 from the present Wal-Mart location.

Because of the size of the proposed building, a conditional use permit is necessary for the project. Wal-Mart has submitted a site plan to the city for review. The city has the power to dictate various aspects of the project, including lighting, landscaping, drainage control, among others. The city must determine whether the site plan meets city zoning requirements. The site plan needs approval from the City Plan Commission and the City Council.

Anyone interested in commenting on the project will be given an opportunity to be heard at the public hearing. Comments should be relevant to the building and site plan. The hearing will be held at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers of City Hall.

The agenda for the Plan Commission meeting, including documents related to the Wal-Mart project and traffic analysis can be found on the City of Merrill web site.
