Merrill girls shake off the rust

The MHS girls track team stuck a toe back into the fray on Friday in an informal get-together with Mosinee in the MHS Fieldhouse.
“The scrimmage Friday was a tune-up – a chance to get the uniforms out, have the freshman get an idea of how we handle meets, and get some times in to start determining the relays,” MHS coach Greg Eichelkraut said. “We’re looking strong in the sprints and jumps with good potential in the hurdles.
“We’ve got some work to do in the distance and throws to develop some depth but there is some good, young talent.”
Strong performances were turned in by pole vaulter Emily Jones, sprinters Mandy Vonderheid, Brianna Piepenbrok and Jess Sabey, middle distance runners Megan Marnhorltz and Ashley Berton, jumpers Marnholtz and Sabey and hurdlers Hannah Marrier and Christa Schleif.
Not only was it an extremely early showing of the girls’ talents, some girls that Eichelkraut will depend upon weren’t available.
“We had a couple athletes not competing as they were either at state buckets or nursing injury conditions,” he said.
