Leaders out-skate Hatchets

The Tomahawk boys hockey team hosted the GNC’s top teams last week and suffered a pair of defeats.
Northland Pines worked a 6-0 lead in last Tuesday’s home game by netting a pair per period, before the Hatchets rallied late to cut it to 7-2.
Then Tomahawk scored a pair of goals in a row on Thursday to pull within 5-3 of visiting Waupaca, with 10 minutes remaining. But the Comets-8-2 in the GNC and 11-5 overall-ripped off a trio of scores to put it out of reach at 8-3.
Dylan Dahl had netted one (A-Luke Schoone, Kenny Kangas) to make it 1-1 in the first before Waupaca scored four unanswered to the middle of the second.
A.J. Bunce (A-Colton Kammer) and Kammer brought it back before the Comet’s rapid rise.
Bjorn Asher (2 g, 1 a) and Beau Ash (1 g, 2 a) pushed Waupaca.
Saves-THS-Evan Russo 15-9-10-34. Waupca-Zach Martin 4-9-15-28.
Where Eagles dare
Pines improved to 8-1 in conference and 11-3-1 overall with the win.
Big games by Dylan Weber (1 g, 3 a), Adam Kresl (3 a) and Mathew Kaitchuck (3 a) boosted Pines.
Bunce (A-Dahl, Sam Heim) and Schoone (A-Heim, Kangas) scored in a 1:16 span late in the third period to avert the shut-out.
Saves-THS-Ole Hanson 16-12-2-30, 6 g; Evan Russo *-*-6–6, 1 g. NP-Jacob Stephan 9-4-6-19.
Tomahawk is now 3-5 in conference and 3-12 overall.
