MAPS art students honored

The artwork of four Merrill Area Public Schools students will be displayed at a state convention in Milwaukee after being recognized by the Student Art Exhibit and Awards.
The pieces, which were created by students Elena Janowiak, Katya Wunsch, Annie DeBroux and Sarah Lentz, will appear at the Frontier Airlines Center on Jan. 18-19 during the 91st State Education Convention. Over 3,000 people are expected to attend the event.
“We are so proud of these students and the hard work that they have put into their art,” said Bruce Anderson, Interim Superintendent of MAPS. “These awards are another example of the outstanding art program that we have in our schools, and of the high level of talent that our students possess.”
In addition to having their works displayed at the convention, the students also received prizes of U.S. Savings Bonds provided by Liberty Mutural/Indiana Insurance. Janowiak placed second ($1,000), Wunsch placed third ($500), DeBroux placed sixth ($250) and Lentz placed seventh ($250) in the competition, which featured hundreds of students from across the state.
The Student Art Exhibit and Awards is sponsored by the Wisconsin Association of School Boards, the Wisconsin Art Education Association and Liberty Mutual/Indiana Insurance.
“These pieces will be prominently displayed as educators from all over Wisconsin gather for the annual convention in Milwaukee,” said Anderson. “This is a great point of pride for our schools, students, parents and teachers.”
