A one-vehicle rollover accident Sunday morning on US Highway 51 sent two Wausau residents to the hospital.

Just after 11:30 a.m., the Lincoln County 911 Center received reports of the crash on southbound US Highway 51 near the 219 mile marker north of County Road H in the Town of Rock Falls. According to a press release from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department, Jerome K. Plant, 49, of Wausau, was driving the vehicle with Sherri D. White, 54, and also of Wausau as a passenger.

Investigators believe Plant suffered some kind of medical emergency which caused him to lose control of the vehicle which left the road. The vehicle traveled about 300 feet off the road before coming to rest in a wooded area.

The Merrill Fire Department Fire/EMS and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene. Plant was airlifted by helicopter to Aspirus Wausau Hospital while White was transported there by ambulance.

As of Sunday, Plant was in the intensive care unit at Aspirus Wausau Hospital, where he is listed in fair condition. White is in the intermediate care unit where she was listed in stable condition.

Traffic on US Highway 51 southbound was shut down for nearly two hours as patients were removed and deputies worked the crash scene. The accident is still under investigation.
