Crews planned to close WIS 64 from Mill Street to Center Avenue in the city of Merrill today (Wednesday, Sept. 8). The closure is necessary to advance to the next stage of the WIS 64 reconstruction. Workers will be replacing the existing pavement with new asphalt, installing new sanitary, water and storm water pipes as well as new curb and gutter. Local access to adjacent businesses and residences will be maintained via side road access.
The closure is expected to last until early November. During this closure, traffic will be detoured using Lincoln County K and County Z. Motorists may also encounter construction activities on adjacent side roads.
Motorists should also be alert for slow moving vehicles, heavy construction equipment and turning trucks near the work zone.
The work requires favorable weather conditions and is subject to change.
Phase 1 of the Hwy. 64 project, from the Prairie River bridge near T. B. Scott Library to Cleveland Street, is projected to be open by the end of September. DOT project manager Richard Simon said crews are currently working on curb/gutter and sidewalk installation, which will be followed by paving.
