The WIAA Division 1 sectional golf tournament at New Richmond, saw Merrill’s Russell Dettmering qualify for his second trip to state.
At the par-72 course, Dettmering stayed steady throughout, shooting exactly par. Dettmering’s 37 on the front nine was matched with a 35 on the back. With a score of 72, Dettmering took second place in the tournament, falling one shot short of New Richmond’s Owen Covey.
Dettmering will be looking for a different result this year, after taking fifth place in the WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament last year. After a round of 70 (-2) on the first day of the 2018 tournament, Dettmering found himself one shot out of the lead. However, a 76 (+4) on the second day pushed Dettmering back to fifth place.
The 2019 WIAA Division 1 golfers tee-off at 7 a.m. Monday. Day two of the Division 1 portion of the tournament will start on Tuesday at noon. Both days the golfers will be playing at the UW-Madison home course, University Ridge in Madison.
