Panel discussion to explore future of legalized marijuana in Wisconsin

The topic of the legalized use of marijuana has seen some very progressive discussions throughout the country. According to ProCon.org, there are nine states and the District of Columbia that have adopted the most expansive laws for marijuana use. However, the majority of states have put into place laws that allow for limited use of medical marijuana under certain circumstances. The decision to recognize the legalized use of marijuana in Wisconsin is now at our doorstep in Lincoln County.

A non-binding referendum question will be included on the Nov. 6 Lincoln County ballot and will be stated as follows:

“Should the State of Wisconsin allow individuals with debilitating medical conditions to use and safely access marijuana for medical purposes, if those individuals have a written recommendation from a licensed Wisconsin physician?”

Your opportunity to become well-informed voters will take place as T.B. Scott Free Library in Merrill presents a Words Worth Hearing Series event – “MARIJUANA—Future of Its Legalized Use in Wisconsin” on Monday, Oct. 8, at 6 p.m. A panel discussion will take place with different views and areas of expertise being presented through a moderated discussion forum. Those in attendance will have the opportunity to participate in a Q & A session after the panelist statements.

The discussion forum moderator will be Licensed Clinical Social Worker Mark Martello, a drug and alcohol counselor, former director of a treatment program and current 35th Assembly candidate. Panelists for the evening will be Sarah Yacoub – Wisconsin Justice Alliance; Tyler Tesch – Drug Resource Officer, Merrill Police Department; and Ron Alexander – Retired North Central Health Care Addiction Counselor.

Other audience members attending may have personal knowledge through experiences with family members or other sources about medical marijuana now legal in other states.

Join the discussion on Monday, Oct. 8, for a structured community forum at the T.B. Scott Free Library as we explore differences of opinion in a healthy, safe conversation about this very sensitive topic. This program, part of the library’s Words Worth Hearing series, provides an opportunity for those following this highly debated topic to engage in a positive and informative discussion and create an open and transparent environment for change.
