Bluejay tennis takes two of three matches

On Friday the Merrill tennis team traveled to Rhinelander for a quad meet featuring Rhinelander, Luther L. Wright High School, and Ashland. The Jays had a good day, taking two of the three matches with the one loss coming to Rhinelander.

Merrill’s first match of the day would be against Rhinelander, who Merrill struggled against, losing 7-0. Despite the struggles, Assistant Coach Brad Barton commented, “The match of the day was a toss up between our number 2 and number 3 doubles teams. Both teams lost their first set but rebounded nicely by winning their second sets. Both teams eventually lost in their third set tiebreak. Anna Skoviera also looked very good in her match as she tried to come back in the second set in her match. Amelia Skoviera continues to impress by making the varsity squad as a freshman.”

Merrill tops Luther L. Wright
In the Jays’ second match of the day they would face off agasint Luther L. Wright High School. Merrill would dominate, taking all seven matches without a single lost set.

In singles play Merrill’s Alexandra Johnson defeated Zaida Lagalo, 6-0, 6-1. Anna Skoviera, of Merrill topped Dahlia Sackman, 6-1, 6-1. Bluejay’s Kamille Ament beat Sarah Murphy, 6-0, 6-1. Amelia Skoviera from Merrill defeated Jasmine Benson, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles play Merrill’s Olivia Wheat-Sierra Humphrey would win by forfeit. Erin Murray-Anna Rydeski of Merrill beat Leilah Anderson-Mercy Kennedy, 6-0, 6-2. Merrill’s doubles team of Emma Jaeger-Molly Rydeski would go on to win by forfeit to finish off the match.

Jays beat Oredockers
For Merrill’s final match of the day they would go up agiant the Ashland Oredockers, who beat Merrill 4-3 last year. Merrill would redeem themselves this time around as they topped Ashland by a score of 6-1.

In singles competition, Taylor Vyskocil of Ashland, beat Merrill’s Alexandra Johnson, 6-0, 6-0. Anna Skoviera of Merrill defeated Ayla Westlund, 6-2, 6-3. Kamille Ament of Merrill beat Bella Wabindato, 6-0, 6-0. The Jays’ Amelia Skoviera took down Tegan McFarlane, 6-3, 6-0.

In doubles action Merrill’s Sierra Humphrey-Olivia Wheat, topped Sophia Root-Maddie Clevette,6-0, 6-3. Erin Murray-Anna Rydeski of Merrill defeated Abby Davidson-Mara Pierce, 7-5, 6-3. Merrill’s Emma Jaeger-Molly Rydeski beat Kalli Mikkonen-Lauren Wensel, 6-0, 6-2.

The Jays will be back in action Thursday, Aug. 30 as they take on Wausau East at Merrill High School, starting at 4p.m.
