THS receives lumps in holiday tourney

The Tomahawk boys basketball team didn’t get much of a present when they attended the Marathon Holiday Tournament early last week.
The host Red Raiders dropped the Hatchets 47-26 on Monday and Newman Catholic pulled out a 51-43 triumph on Tuesday.
“We played two really good teams and for the most part competed well,” THS coach Tim Albert said.
A 14-8 edge in the third quarter opened up a 24-23 game on Tuesday. A 5-0 mini-run in the fourth pulled Tomahawk with six, but Wausau closed it out with free throws.
“This was a much better outing for us on the offensive end of the floor,” Albert said. “We took good care of the basketball and had two great trips down six, but couldn’t get the open shots we got to fall.”
Scoring came from Justin Jarvensivu (20), Jordan Roessler (12) and Brandon Vecchio (9).
Marathon sprint
Tomahawk trailed Marathon just 19-16 at intermission after holding the Raiders to six second-quarter points. But Marathon bounced it to 35-23 in the third, and put it away with a 12-3 fourth.
“We played good enough defensively to compete, but our offense wasn’t very good,” Albert said. “They pressured us into turnovers that led to easy baskets on their end.”
Scoring was turned in by Roessler (10), Vecchio (8) and Andrew Olson (4).
