Brickyard School open at Lincoln County Fair

“Country Schools: The Inside Story” is the theme of Brickyard School’s Annual Open House for 2014. The dates are July 30-Aug. 3, during the Lincoln County Fair. Hours for the Open House are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day.
A typical day at a one-room country school will be depicted; the ins and outs of a school day and little-known bits of history about the routines, the lessons – even the furniture – will be disclosed. For example, where was Brickyard’s wood stove with its intricately-patterned jacket procured? It’s closer than you think. And, could a rooftop school bell be ordered from Sears Roebuck & Company? Or, just why did Edna Knospe Kraft carry a huge jar of paste home with her in the evening? There’s much interesting insider information to be discovered at your visit to Brickyard School during the fair.
A very special part of this year’s display will be devoted to a tribute to Ruth Dreger. Brickyard School owes much to Ruth, who passed away earlier this year, She chronicled the history of country schools in so many ways. Stop in and find out about her lasting legacy.
