Live Sustainable, Lincoln County invites you to join them to learn from four experienced local gardeners about four difference types of gardens on April 8 at the Lincoln County Service Center- Lower Level Room 156, 801 N. Sales St., Merrill, at 6 p.m.
Jamie Kalvestran will show us slides of her straw bale garden adventures along with a step by step “how to” make your own. A straw or hay bale garden is a gardening method used for raising vegetables, herbs, and flowers directly on a bale. Straw or hay bales from alfalfa, wheat, oats, rye, or other cereals are suitable for making a garden bed.
Richard Thwaits will talk about Hugelkultur which is a raised bed, low irrigation form of gardening that originated in Germany. Hugelkultur is an old German concept/word meaning “hill-culture.” Wood is buried under topsoil (either in a hole or right on the ground) and as it breaks down, it holds lots of moisture and provides sustained nutrients for plant growth.
Bob Polesnak will discuss “Raised Bed Gardening.” Bob will describe the methods to make a raised garden bed and when a raised bed is most appropriate. Raised beds can be used where soil or drainage is poor; to create visual impact; to make gardening more accessible to the physically challenged, and for earlier spring planting since a raised bed warms up faster.
Lynn Zentner will share her experience with lasagna gardens. Lasagna gardening is easy! You don’t have to remove existing sod and weeds. Lasagna gardening or Sheet Mulching is a no-till organic gardening method that results in rich, fluffy soil with very little work from the gardener.
