Merrill girls pick up their pace

The Bluejay swimmers took on two dual meets in a week, scoring 53 each time. Medford put up 116 on Tuesday and SPASH compiled 107 on Thursday.
Medford swept the wins on Tuesday.
“The team swam very well and put up a good fight,” MHS coach Allie Thut said. “We had several 2nd and 3rd place finishes and swam competitively. We had several personal best times already, which is exciting for it only being the first meet of the year.”
Placing 2nd were: Kendyl Pettit (200 free, 2:22.11/ 100 back, 1:15.95); Jennica Jahnke (100 free, 1:03.01); Courtney Grieser (500 free, 7:05.71); the 200 medley team (Taylor LaBorde, Jahnke, Robin Opsahl, Pettit, 2:11.73) and the 400 free team (LaBorde, Opsahl, Miranda Jahnke, Pettit, 4:33.59). Thirds came from: M. Jahnke (50 free, :29.52); Opsahl (100 fly, 1:21.88); LaBorde (500 free, 7:06.15); the 200 free team (J. Jahnke, M. Jahnke, Emily Gessler, Holli Halfman, 2:00.81).

Merrill’s runner-up finishes on Thursday came from Pettit (100 free, 1:01.72) and the 200 free squad (J. Jahnke, M. Jahnke, LaBorde, Pettit, 1:55.14).
“The team swam very well here considering the adjustment of having two meets in one week and school beginning,” Thut said. “Steven Point’s team is triple the size of ours. The team demonstrates excellent sportsmanship and team unity, supporting and encouraging each other.”
Rating 3rd were: J. Jahnke (200 IM, 2:41.61/ 100 fly, 1:18.61); Pettit (50 free (:28.15); LaBorde (100 back, 1:17.64); the 200 medley (LaBorde, J. Jahnke, Opsahl, Pettit, 2:15.42); and the 400 free (Opsahl, Liv Wilmink, Grieser, M. Jahnke, 4:39.16).
