City of Merrill reduces speed limit on E. Main St.

The City of Merrill Common Council approved the reduction of the 35 MPH speed limit down to 25 MPH on E. Main Street from Memorial Drive, east to the intersection at Sturdevant Street. The reduction in the speed limit will take effect on June 1, 2012.
The speed reduction is an attempt to ease congestion at the intersection of Memorial Drive and E. Main Street by slowing down the westbound traffic on E. Main Street as it approaches Memorial Drive.
“The reduction of speed in this area should make it safer for drivers to enter or cross E. Main Street from Memorial Drive, while also making it safer for pedestrian traffic near the intersection and along E. Main Street,” according to Merrill Police Chief Ken Neff.
The new speed limit signs are expected to be erected before June 1st. “Violators of the new speed limit will receive warnings for the first couple of months after the change takes effect in an effort to educate the public first,” Neff said.
